Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
