The star has handed over the full amount of his £25k award cash to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to save the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

The star was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his new release his work was declared the top album of the previous year.

He has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in acknowledgment of the essential function grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked the artist. "These locations are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

In the last year, major artists including the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its initiatives to support the industry, by adding a small levy to their admission fees, which goes to help local stages.

He also took part, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across Britain.

The money supported spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties caused by flooding, blazes and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces were granted funding support in upgrading amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted performers and audiences.

"The idea that revenue from performances in major spaces supports the local stages, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just common sense," the star has commented.

He is among several artists to donate his award winnings to good deeds.

Back when the band earned the trophy in 1996 for their release their work, frontman Jarvis Cocker stated that the act would give their cash to the non-profit the charity.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite shared her award across several charities, including the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they required updated gear," Ms Dynamite shared with outlets.

In recent years, the band gave their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their band, in addition to other local music groups.

And 1994 winners they contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," said singer Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't need the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory impacted somebody else's life."

Last week, the trust announced it had saved a couple of small stages in that region, by bringing them into local control.

One venue in Southampton and the other in Bristol were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the buildings.
